Jonathan Powell plays Bax's one-movement First Piano Sonata (alas cruelly divided here because of YouTube's 10 minute rule - part II isof course also on this channel). Bax wrote this passionate sonata in 1910 (revised 1921) in memory of his abortive love affair with the Ukrainian Natalia Karginska. The bells of Kiev can be head ringing out in the sonata's final passages. From the 2009 'Indian Summer in Levoca' Festival.
Messiaen's language can be heard in several places- I wonder if he knew Bax: 6'12'' & 6''42'' etc sound like they were almost quoted at the end of Visions l'amen
