@lolz3626 there is no such thing as a soft penalty rules are rules this was a CLEAR penalty

And another thing. The reason LN turns his body is not to somehow trip FG, it is bead FG's foot hits him on the thigh, and because your centre of gravity is about your belly button, that causes him to rotate, COMBINED with the instive reaction to curl up in yet another attempt to protect himself.

you realise that when he is supposedly sticking his arm up, he isn't even looking. He is looking away, and why would he be looking away do you ask? Because the instant fear of being kneed in the head with make you instinctively react to protect your head in any way, in his case the best he could to was raise his elbow to block the foot (which he doesn't even manage to do) and turn and duck his head.
You do put up a very good argument but this is simply to light to call a foul, you try to make what is Lucas Neill's basic instinct to protect himself a cynical foul when in reality Grosso tried to knock the ball around neill but failed.Coupled with a card happy ref that has made questionable decsions in the past just watch England vs Russia the same ref gives a penalty outside the box and allows an offside goal to stand.

@lolz3626 The self protection argument simply does not hold. First if protecting yourself means interfering with the other then it is a penalty anyway. Why? because otherwise everybody will keep protecting themselves out of every foul. Second, in this case Lucas Neill deliberately turns to get in the way. How then can you claim self protection. If I come at you then you can claim self protection but If you get in my way and protect yourself then I call it interference.

Although you point out the incident well it does not justify a foul. Grosso made contact with Neill, and in order for a foul to occur, Neill had to have made contact with Grosso that would force him to the ground. this video is in slides, which can alter the reality of the situation. Neill could have just been protecting himself from a player charging at him therefore he raised his arm over his head. that is not a foul.

@TASSOS502 If you wish to see a good slow motion video look for "Lucas Neill vs Fabio Grosso - Was There Contact?"
Grosso kicked the ball around LN and turned in that direction. What caused the contact is LN who stuck his elbow out and rotated between FG and the ball. Then he used hs hand behind his back to finish him off.
