http://www.mda.state.mn.us This time lapse video shows a runoff event that occurred over 16 hours on June 15, 2011. This storm delivered 3.76 inches of precipitation, which was preceded by a 1.3 inch rain the day before. The flume is 2.5 feet deep and flow peaked at 2.3 feet. The flow depth remained greater than half a foot for about 6 hours. The pictures were taken with a field camera mounted downstream of a flume (fiberglass structure used to monitor runoff) at the edge of a corn field.
A single event, as shown here, can contribute the majority of runoff for the entire growing season. These events are episodic and region specific. That's why Discovery Farms Minnesota uses automated equipment that collects samples whenever water is flowing through the flume. The Discovery Farms program monitors edge-of-field runoff, on participating farms, 365 days per year.
