A tutorial based on Kuikueg's excellent ''four bearings'' method .
Visit Subsim.com for more info.

With this method ,we can verify the target's true course, target's speed and range to target by using only the bearings from a hydrophone of a ww2 u-boat .
The same method works with any bearings (-not only by hydrophone-) from scopes, radar or...UZO !At this tutorial ...i used the hydro bearings.
Another ''hot'' point of this method is that the u-boat is ALWAYS moving FREELY during all the procedure ! you can go with whatever speed you want and whatever course you want....no need to keep constant ...ANYTHING ! (....only the time intervals must be equal).

in this video, you will see how to do the ''job'' with ONLY FOUR BEARINGS (instead of five that are showing at Kuikueg's notes).
My respect to Kuikueg , in my opinion this is the VERY BEST method i have seen so far !

Enjoy,

  • I have a question: What if my sub's course happens to be parallel with the target's course, and I'm actually traveling alongside the target all the time, how do I find the red line then? Since I assume that the first 3 bearings won't even intersect with each other ??

  • @Khazar01

When two bearing lines happens to be parallel (extremely unsual to happen though) means that you are on a collision course with target (pay attention: this DOESN'T mean that you are moving parallel with him).

don't wait for the third bearing in this case becuase you allready know that you are on a collision course!

  • @Khazar01 ,

to 'lock' his exact course ...do this:

    1. mark on map the point that YOUR boat would be after X time (X=time between b1 and b2) if you continue to move forward and draw from this point a line parallel to b1 and b2

    2. repeat the step 1 one more time ...so now you have two theorical bearings (lets call them b3 and b4)

    3. CHANGE COURSE and speed and after exactly X time take a bearing to target and find where this bearing is intercepting b3 (call this mark ..as 'mark1')

  • @Khazar01 ,

    4. after exactly X time (again) take a bearing to target and find where this bearing is intercepting b4 (call this mark ..as 'mark2')

    5. mark1 and mark2 are two true positions of target so by connecting them ...you have the true course of target

    bye

  • Is the a mod your using? If so, whats the name?

  • Why the hell is this nothing like my sh3 ?!!

  • Can you please list the mods you are using; particularly to get the charts for torpedo runs at x degrees etc in the periscope view and the speed / distance charts: I am running stock SH III and these aren't present but would be so very useful ;)
