The Changing Face of Childhood. Against a dramatic sky Lewis Cage stands before the viewer full of self-confidence, with one hand on his hip and the other on his cricket bat he is mimicking the pose of a military commander. Cotes picture was painted six years after the publication of Rousseau's 'Emile' where he stressed the importance of the outdoor life and games.
