  • Thank you for posting this. I can barely watch it but it's so important for my healing. Thank you.

  • This was the second worst day of my life... it took my soul...

  • Take-home lesson: grab what you can in a minute or less and get out ON FOOT.

  • Wow! 20 years later 10/20/2011! This footage was shot by KTVU channel 2. I am a lost of the cameraman's name but he managed to survive this entire day along with his producer! Too many memories of that day.

  • @packerlandmike My Dad was a Vallejo firefighter and he also worked this fire as part of an OES strike team. He said the same thing, biggest fire he had ever seen.

  • WOW!! that was utter chaos! God bless the victims of this... I heard a lot of the people who perished were trapped in their cars trying to escape!

  • I am not religious but I was thanking God that I was in eastern part of Oakland Hills in Chabot where it was still safe but watching this hell from a distance made me dream about it for months afterwards. Now I have to clear all my brush and trees as requiered by the Fire Department , I hope it will never repeat. It's been 20 years and it's still clearly in mind as if it happened yesterday. I can imagine the horror people closer to it lived through.

  • the guy with the white supra with the chrome wheels is crazy for stopping on flaming debris

  • One word: Insane.

  • I remember the local news started with the video of the guy getting into his car at 0:45 with the flaming debris next to his wheel. That's etched in my mind.

I had an uncle who was a San Francisco city firefighter who worked on this blaze. Said it was the biggest single fire he'd ever seen, and he's done forest fires.
