http://www.drmarcspitz.com Orange County CA podiatrist and Peripheral Neuropathy expert Dr. Marc Spitz offers suggestions and help for those who suffer from poor balance and says your not alone. Over 50 % of people who have peripheral neuropathy suffer from balance problems. Balance problems cause unsteadiness when walking and also can lead to serious injuries as a result from falls. Balance problems resulting from peripheral neuropathy are due to damage to the nerves. Without adequate feeling in your feet, you lose the ability to feel the ground that you are walking on. Nerve damage can also cause weakness to muscles of the feet and legs which can make walking extremely difficult. One of the key factors recommended for improving gait and balance is incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Physical activity can help strengthen muscles and prevent muscle atrophy. Walking, swimming, water aerobics and the frequent use of a stationary bicycle can be very beneficial. Mind-body conditioning routines such as Pilates and the eastern discipline of Tai Chi are also activities that can improve balance.
