Nuclear Blast - Operation Crossroads - Baker Event 1946

I understand the need to want to inspect all those containers coming into our ports from overseas. And I really think we need to find a way to make sure they are checked long before they get to the shores of our great country.

I did a post on this many months back and I still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about it. Here's the way I vision a nuke going off in this country.

I visualize a high-level terrorist sitting on the dock of a bay somewhere in this country of ours, waiting on his ship to come in. When his ship moves in to port... he starts chanting Allahu Akbar... Allahu Akbar... Allahu Akbar... Allahu Akbar... Allahu Akbar--- then he stands up... pumping his fist into the air and shouts at the top of his lungs one more time... Allahu Akbar... then he pushes a button. BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And our beloved country goes into shock and mourning like never before......

@cathalferris Actually, the jury is still out on it given the inclarity of the film, and as no battleship has ever been "upended" there's no way to know for sure.

Whatever happened, it wasn't good though :D

@Whatupwidat It's not the actual ship itself that you see, it's a 'shadow' in the water column caused by the ship diverting some of the air blast around itself. The ship was still inside the column at sea level, and sank when the column dropped back down. The wreckage doesn't support the ship having gone vertical. The weight of the water column was estimated to be about 2 million tonnes which is no mean feat..

That's the USS Arkansas, a battleship that weighed about 27,000 tons....just being tossed into the air.

this was only a 21 kilotonn bomb. "only" is ouf course relative....

but compared to the Castle Bravo experimental bomb, which was 15 megatonns, this is nothing. pretty cool footage though
