Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna perform the romantic and characteristic balcony scene ("O nuit divine!... Ah! ne fuis pas encore!") of Gounod's opera 'Roméo et Juliette'. Conducted by Michel Plasson.

  • This makes me want to learn French :]

  • I saw them at the met in the late 90's they both were great. Agree Roberto is one of the greatest Romeos.

  • I think so. Check Amazon.

  • I think they are perfect for this role.

  • does anyone know if the entire performance is available? alagna is such a superb romeo and gheorghiu's juliette is very touching!

  • I think they are really physically convincing, part from wonderful interpretation. Anyway, Romeo and Juliette (Giulietta) are supposed to be fourteen or so, and I assure you you'll never find opera singers of that age that are mature enough to perform on operatic stage! Anyway, they look so youthful here!

  • yeah, true... thats the toughest thing about this opera, I think =)

...except very few 20 year olds have the maturity in their sound to make it sound THIS amazing

    =)

  • mmm except two 20 yr old singers would not be able to sustain such demanding roles vocally. in fact it would inhibit their development. i totally agree with you. but in opera its as much about the audience's imagination as it is about being true to the character.

  • Yeah! I know a lot of people are going to hate me for saying this, but even though they have beautiful voices, I just don't believe them because of how old they are... I'd like to see them cast some young 20-year- olds in these roles. I mean, I know opera is really all about the beautiful singing. But maybe it would be even more beautiful if the audience was taken on a journey, too! Right? :)

  • Not bad, but I have trouble watching opera singers play Romeo and Juliet. They never look right for the characters.
