Primitive bridge over the Tha River in Luang Nam Tha, Laos. There are two larger concrete bridges at either end of town, but this one adjoins the center of town with the Khamu villages on the other side. It is sturdy enough to support the passage of motorcycles.
Luang Nam Tha is one of the oldest continually-inhabited regions in Laos, with artifacts dating back to the Stone Age. The city was largely obliterated during the Vietnam War era, due to conflicts between the Communists and the US-backed Royalists. Present-day Luang Nam Tha gets most of its income from tourism, due to the proximity of Nam Ha Protected Area. But beware! Many of the eco-tourism outfits in town will take you to rubber plantations and squalid villages, and charge you an arm and a leg to do it.
