Johnny Adams (Laten John Adams, 5 January 1932 - 14 September 1998) was an American blues singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Adams was known as "The Tan Canary" for the amazing range of his singing voice and his gospel influenced style. He began his career singing gospel, but crossed over to secular music in 1959, and scored a national hit with the single "I Won't Cry." That was followed by a string of regional hits in the 1960s which included "Release Me" and "Reconsider Me."

In the 1980s and 1990s, Adams recorded several award-winning albums for Rounder Records.

He died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1998 after a long battle with stomach cancer.

Notable Recordings * "I Won't Cry" * "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" * "Reconsider Me" * "Release Me" * "There Is Always One More Time"

  • @phillippibeard i live in canada and i'm afraid we didn't have the communication that we have now. i'm sorry i missed the boat on this talent. i've been listening to a lot of musicians and singers from that era on you tube, i'm glad to have run into johnny adams. thanks for the message

  • @denisjl100 Johnny Adams was popular around New Orleans about 50 years ago. His biggest hit in the region was "Reconsider Me" if I remember correctly.

  • @phillippibeard i'm a canadian and our exposure to early rock and roll was limited to black station we could listen to. i could listen to chicago, new york, cleveland . most of the time we had to rely on the skip of radio stations signals on the lake. am radio was like that. where was johnny adams area?

  • @denisjl100 It must have something to do with when and where you lived. Around here, for my generation, the Tan Canary is a legend.

  • i used to listen to this music on all the black stations when i was a kid. i don't remember this guy. probably didn't get enough exposure because he worked for small labels. i'm convinced had there been internet in those days he would have done much better. has a great vocal range.
