Vos qui admiramini by Philippe de Vitry performed live in concert by Lumina Vocal Ensemble, Director Anna Pope.
Not only a great medieval love song, this also displays intense religious fervour. It demonstrates the close link between religious and secular love during the medieval period, and in particular the adoration of the Virgin Mary.
Recorded during 'A Mediaeval Celebration' in the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival by Rosemary Beal, 5MBS at Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide, South Australia.
Singers: Rachel Sag, Raphaela Mazzone, Beth Christian, Anna Pope, Kate Tretheway, Melinda Pike, Fiona O'Connor, Rosemary Byron-Scott, Tim Muecke, Bernard Mageean, Evan Sanders, Clive Conway, Kenneth Pope & Andrew McCauley. Film by Anna Pope.

English translation (by Bernard Mageean):
TRIPLUM
Take heed you who admire maidens. If we are to be worthy of wedding the one above all others, when we have married her she must be greatly loved.
This is the one beautiful in aspect, humble in bearing and virtuous in conduct. That other you may consider is vile, harshly bold and scornful of the virtues. This maiden is a shining light, you are dark cloud; she is a swift eagle, you are crawling serpents. She reigns eternally, you are helpless in a wretched vale of tears.
This royal virgin is my sweet love and holy spouse. I am king, she my queen. What more to say? We who know all choose her as worthy, like a rose before its thorn. Therefore rouse yourselves. Time is flying and death approaching. Serve her and call upon her, for if you do not you will not enjoy the glorious reward you seek. Hurry to it!
MOTETUS
Most dear virginal image, adorned with bodily purity,
you have healed my inner heart with a wound most sweet,
promoting there the spirit of a love that never leaves the heart.
To wound me again with this pleasing pain you gave birth to the pure one. O queen, embrace your son and draw him to your breast.
O king of kings, join eye to eye and mouth to mouth for a kiss,
and breathe a word from your lips, which when received may make this flesh godlike.
TENOR
Rejoice glorious lady. May He live in us.
