A poem about the power of a first kiss.

First Kiss

Stark thoughts of love prod our needing
to forget, in middle years, the little things
that thread through all the regrets
that still threaten to sabotage the going
of an innocence that surpassed all knowingness
like taboos that even now sicken us
to break, like genuflecting
in front of an altar where Im certain
no God resides, yes Im certain
all that aside
oh how, even now the memory of
that first kiss snakes its way
loud-bound to the surface
like a premise, a promise
shattered and scattered like a kiss
like that first kiss.

When our lips parted, and breath traded
bodies, an electric current flowed
through our limbs and fueled decades
of substandard lovers
and settled-on romances,
to avoid loneliness or harsh judgments
of being less.

Unless we untie
each tether beneath the canopy
of unrequited wishes,
or impose a fortress around our hearts
blocking loves warm breeze
from infiltrating and carrying
away our essence,
we are kept blinded to others
with genuine desires,
of untainted connections
living eternally in love.

Oh, my sweet,
Were we devils in our innocence
seraphs in that crime
that time has carelessly corroded?
Those lips that touched as if in mocking prayer
that we thought play
now time-forced to part
and between our rotting edges
a dark dawn blows through
and some youth will doubtless fill it
with the faith that we once knew.

Every word, every action, compared
to the moment your lips tore the garments
from my soul, washed me with
a penetrating light which left me burnt;
yet, I come back to you, my sweet,
On my knees I beg
for your release of my heart -
restore those threads of innocent desire
so my next kiss will be
my last, first kiss.

  • This is wonderful poetry. There are so many ideas in this and such good poetry that I will probably have to read/listen to it several dozen times. That however will be a pleasure because only by reading poetry of this quality will I improve my own.

    Thanks for posting this

    Love, Peter
