In which Jim shares some footage and a poem about a woodpecker.
It is a hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus). It appears to be a female, as the male has a small spot of red at the side of its head. The footage was taken in my back yard today, so it's not the same woodpecker as the one in the poem.
The story behind the poem: I was at the cabin, listening to NPR, and Senator Mark Dayton (now former Senator) was talking about why he closed his office in Washington. It was something about an anthrax scare, I think. That was on Thursday, October 14, 2004.

Hairy, Woolly and the Palliated are constant companions round here. I hated the Raven when I lived in Uptown. Now I absolutely adore them. I've seen them suddenly fly inverted and make the most intriguing sound.

Glad you didn't throw anything at it, like I believe Poe did at the Raven...I think this guy may have been "Woody"! Great parody!

I once wrote a song setting of a very similar poem. I wish I'd known about your poem at the time, and not just because it's so much shorter.
