I start basic leash work around 10 weeks of age. Depends on the puppy. Good luck.

do you use a check chain from day 1?

No. I use a leather slip leash until the puppies are about 12 weeks old. Then I switch to a fine chain collar with minimal pressure. To get to the point of the puppy in this video, I used an awful lot of freeze dried liver treats to initiate behavior. After the puppies learn the desired behavior, I substitute praise and touch as the reward.

A 3 1/2 month old puppy should not be so completely disinterested in their handler. Something has gone terribly wrong when a PUPPY will not even look at you.
