that is probably the longest cadenza i have ever heard, this concerto is by far and perhaps, more beautiful than tchaikovsky's first..........
-
The cadenza actually doesn't start until 6:12... So it's about a minute shorter than you'd think, but it's still one of the longest cadenzas... Don't you love it?!
I agree I like it more than the first... Much more...

You've reuploaded several minutes of the first part -the first bad cadenza probably not written by Tchaïkovsky himself- and cutten the end of the movement. Just to make you know...

I adore this concerto both in terms of what the piano does as well as the orchestra. The only part that I detest is the first couple of minutes from the first movement. I can never come to like them.

@marcusantonius90 Tchaik 1 is "iconic" and "simply fantastic melodically", eh? Well that's a detailed analysis that isn't applicable to hundreds if not thousands of pieces of music. Congratulations. You must have done at least half a semester of undergrad music 101 to come up with that sort of insight.
-
@marcusantonius90 Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I hold mine; which, if you notice, is why I phrased my comment as an Opinion rather than an absolute.
-
@UlfenDaddy No, it's not a better work. A more mature work perhaps, but the first concerto is magical.
-
@1984ekul Who gives a flying f**k about compositional grammar? Only music geeks do. The plain fact is that the first concerto is iconic and simply fantastic melodically. The opening of the first concerto is the most famous in music history after Beethoven's 5th symphony. The second concerto is great, but not as special - you have to accept this.

足讚! 足聚人 跟當知影 有第一號 母知 也有2 3 4 號...感恩啦!! Very good concerto other than No.1, well familized by people as we Taiwaner.

@1984ekul Agree-- while I certainly enjoy the First Concerto, I've always asked why it would seem that the Second is ignored. I think it's a far Better work in just about any aspect; eminently beautiful and exciting. I'd gotten the Cherkassky recording when I was a student (about 14, trying to learn it,) it wasn't until I was FORTY that I ever got to hear it performed live. Sad!

such power and intelligence in Gilel's playing - absolutely amazing!
The whole versus thing going on the two concertos is absurd. I cannot imagine someone who loved either one ending up disliking the other, as a whole at least. There is no such correlation between fame and greatness - Raff's "Leonore" Symphony was damned famous back then but who has even heard of it now. It is stupid to regard something special only by that fact... but it sure is a good way for a new listener to start. I don't think any of the responses below shed light on much.
