Through his virtuosity, strength of personality and high intelligence, Yuri Bashmet has given the viola a new prominence in musical life. Considered to be the world best viola player of the modern age, he has motivated the leading composers of our time such Shostakovich and Schnittke to write music specifically for him. Yuri Bashmet and Moscow Soloists celebration their 20th anniversary this year and will be performing in Toronto on May 3, 2012 as part of the North American Tour.

I hate to be a critic so I wont. I enjoyed this, but not as much as the "Mozart Duo for Violin & Viola in G major Rondo"
I think the phrase 'strength of personality' can automatically elicit a level of distrust. There are plenty of subjective arguments for, or against DukeBARKing's honest, and testing, submission. Perhaps his post was simply candid, though unbacked, provocation of thought?

I didn't know that Shostakovich had written especially for Bashmet (see info). ? the viola sonata of shostakovich was written for Bashmet's teacher, the less promoted Fyodor Druzhinin.This video is really 'Kitsch'. Although I have my doubts concerning the 'strength of personality' of Bashmet , I believe he is a great musician, better then this video
