UNHCR is supporting the initiative by the Government of Sri Lanka to return internallly displaced persons (IDPs) back to their places of origin in the country's north and east.

Each family receives relief items such as sleeping mats, bed sheets, hurricane lamps and tarpaulins from UNHCR. The agency is also providing each family with a shelter grant of Rs. 25,000 which is around US$220 to help restart their lives.

In addition, UNHCR is monitoring the conditions in the return areas to identify gaps in assistance and protection of the returnees.
