William R. Evans was a torpedo-bomber pilot in Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8). That squadron operated from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in World War II. Evans and all but one of his squadron mates were killed in action in the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942.

Charles Gillispie was Evans' roommate in the Wesleyan University Class of 1940. He has special memories of Dan Sachs and Bill Evans.

  • Who's Dan?

  • Bob Evans watched the japanese carriers go up in smoke in the battle of midway, he saw the dive bombers hit them.

  • The men of Torpedo 8 were the greatest of the greatest generation. The heroism they showed can not be measured. Every American should be thankful.

  • This is an insightful interview.

I knew a man who had the same, described, quality (also a WWII vet--flier).

He survived the war, and was (unlike many vets today) quite outspoken about his experiences, but I always had the sense, too, that he'd have been just as happy, somehow, had he NOT come back from the war.

A "Higher Quality" of person indeed. You can't know where or when you will come across someone like this, but I will opine that your chances are much higher if he/she is a vet.

  • They knew that their planes were doomed without fighter scorts but

they did it anyway. They must have seen their buddies get shot down one after the next. Imagine the horror and resolve of these pilots and tail gunners. How would you have felt in their position? RIP may God bless you all.

  • The TBD Devastator was a flying deathtrap. The Zeros ripped them apart. Torpedo 8 never had a chance. Brave men!
