This is Dick Dale, the King of Surf Guitar, performing his enchanting "ESPERANZA" live at The Surf Club in Ortley Beach, NJ on 5/29/07. This is a FAVORITE of mine, and after this song, I was the honored recipient of his (ever-so-slightly shredded) personalized guitar pick, SWAK.

  • Out of curiosity... what is the thickness of the guitar pick you received? I always wondered what pick he used. Should be a number on there.

  • No number. Dean Markley. HEAVY. I just touched it. Oh, the memories!! The Holy piece of plastic that MADE this song that night! :) I can never get TOO giddy over it.

  • Where to get the song esperanza ? On which album is it ?

  • On "Tribal Thunder."

  • Oh yeah, and its the shiny kind but not see through you know what i mean. And like Queen Christin says no number on it, its white with Dean Markley on one side and the Dick Dale skull logo on the other side. And he wore it down heavily :)

  • Just wanted to join in the guitar pick talk.

Last year my biggest dream came true when I saw him perform live here in belgium, twice in one weekend. Best music ever. After the 2nd gig he went in the audience to have a chat. I told him I loved him and that hes my biggest inspiration in music and live. Made him happy, without me asking he gave me his last pick he used after signing it.

Its less thick then I expected, somewhere between 1mm and 1.2mm. I'm sure because i play 1.26mm and its thinner

  • This man is a big part of Fender guitar and amp history! He signed my Strat in "96; thanks for the great memories!

  • i gotta say nitro right now is my favorite. I feel so badass playing dick dale songs on guitar

  • This is my favorite song by him! I'M A DICK HEAD!

  • I would feel the same way ^_^

  • Believe it or not, the best way to play staccato is with a heavy pick!

  • hey chud, I've talked with dick dale about this. His picks are heavy but still have a slight give in them. My guess is that that are in the 1mm to 1.5mm range. I use 2mm picks and there is absolutely no give in those.

I got it straight from the horse's mouth. Can't help you with the exact number though.
