(Chicago, IL) -- State Senate Republicans last Thursday focused on the Illinois budget and stated their opposition to Governor Pat Quinn's plan to borrow money, at a lower interest rate than what the state is currently paying, to pay the state's overdue bills to small business owners, human service providers and others, bills which are six to nine months overdue.
The six suburban Republican state senators at a breakfast said they opposed Quinn's plan to swap more expensive, high-interest rate debt at 12% per year for cheaper debt at 5%.
"Borrow! Another 8.4 or 8.7 billion. That is just unbelievable," said Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale).
"We've got to cut back the spending or we have got a disaster staring us in the face," said Sen. Chris Lauzen (R-Aurora).
The Republicans also want to cut spending by $5 billion, including about $1 billion from public education and $1 billion from Illinois human services.
If a state can't afford to bury the dead, then yes, I think it's time to stop spending money they don't have. Why do politicians wait until crisis time before they act? ========= Illinois officials sent a letter to more than 600 funeral directors around the state to let them know there's no money for funerals for individuals on public assistance. We're about to open a casino in Des Plaines so how can our state be in financial trouble?
