The EU has declared war on energy waste -- and on conventional light bulbs. It has been a symbol of the modern industrial era for 130 years.

But it is inefficient, and is about to be extinguished. The German firm Paulmann and Dutch multinational Philips are just two of the manufacturers developing more energy-efficient lights. One problem is that the politicians want incandescent bulbs to be phased out more swiftly than industry can deliver alternatives, as our reporter Carmen Meyer discovered.

  • This is BS & a cash grab. If I have two lamps on in a room that produce only 20% light energy the remaining energy is not lost it is given off as heat which supplements or reduces the amount of time or frequency my furnace would operate, even if only by minutes. Another BS 'energy saving argument- like growing cvorn & ruffage removal to make ethanol but not factoring in the requirement to use more 'man made fertilizer to rejuvenate the soil.- fertilizer that is produced using oil.

  • u all dont need bulbs, get up at sunrise n go to bed AT sun down o either gater light bugs n store them on a glass jar <------------this is a more efficient way to get free ligth n yes my computer n Hpower run on solar power

  • @FoxIslandman sorry i have to correct myself on the last post.. anything thats below 40watts which is 20 watt light bulb will not be banned...incandescents will be available.

  • @FoxIslandman many countries around the world are banning bulbs but not here in the USA. congress is confusing a lot of ppl here. here in the US, they want more efficient lighting for the future. what ever bulb thats not efficient will go after 2014. there are already incandescent bulbs that are efficient enough to stay in the market such as HALOGENs. plus not all bulbs are being phased out. anything under 20watts, over 100watts 3 way, flood lights and colored bulbs are not being banned

  • Frederich the Great would execute these traitors in the name of the crown and the people!

  • I like Halogen light bulbs which have a good light quality, especially for my track lighting. I will never use LED light bulbs because they do NOT throw off enough light, are tinted blue, and generally too omni-directional. Sure, LEDs are good in flashlights but not in home lighting. I like CFLs (2700K Warm White) in my Bathroom vanity; they are just typical fluorescent tubes coiled tightly into a self-enclosed electronic ballast -nothing technologically special. I am about freedom of choice

  • @stickedU maybe so but with in time, the prices of halogens will go down. They even have Halogens now that are as much as 50% energy efficient and they last longer than the current bulbs. I have incandescent bulbs in a few of my lamps that hasnt burnt out in 3 years so not all of them have a short life time. another false saying i dont think there will be much compitition between halogens, cfls and LEDs because most ppl would agree that halogens give off nicer light than cfls or leds.

  • @noreaga12326 Halogens are a better bulb than conventional bulbs but are too expensive for what you get and could be much more efficient . Once those two categories get better they will be very competitive with LEDs and CFLs.

  • @stickedU the only fool here is YOU. i can argue with u forever about this. Halogen bulbs are already efficient enough to stay on the market and they are here to stay. You just cant face the fact that most ppl like me hate cfls. deal with it cuz not everybody is a religious mental case like you and your green friends are. duno know about other countries but here in the US, incandescents are going to continue to be here whether u like it or not. U may wana get a box of kleenex now, you cry baby.

  • @stickedU amazing how you only believe what u wana believe and thats fine. Just for the record, i dont disrespect u for liking cfls or leds. you are entitled to like what u want. But i dont respect u for believing garbage about flourecents saving the planet. yes, cfls and leds will ALSO be the future lighting. Ur right about that. BUT incandescents will not go away 100%. Here in the US, there will be acceptions to the ban. Halogens are already here and theres nothing u can do about it.
