This Monk tune is so melodically and harmonically sophisticated and interesting. O.K., I should have used a metronome, but I uploaded this video anyway. Part of the time I play "outside" or against the chord structure. I try not to go so far out that I get lonely, which I tend to do when I play for myself. Besides Monk, Bill Evans playing this is my favorite.

  • Well guys... and dolls... this is about the best performance I ever heard of the subject matter... relaxed, unobtrusive, improvisatory, original... everything you want. Excellent hand position, superb technique... this dude must be someone we all know but he stays incognito... or else we all should know him. tried to make som i.di by the hands and their usage... to no avail...

    Excellent,,, I am indebted forever...

  • Bravo! Excellent usage of the "less is more" technique. I've heard more renditions of this piece than the number of muscles it takes to produce a smile, and this is one of my favorites.

  • Nice work. If you are playing Thelonious Monk you should try to paw and beat the keys like your are mad at them. :) He was once coined "the elephant on the keyboard" (Philip Larkin)
