It all began as a dream for the late Laurel and Hardy museum curator Bill Cubin but now, 17 years later thanks to funds raised by the 'sons of the desert', the Laurel and Hardy statue has now been erected in Stan Laurel's home town of Ulverston in Cumbria.

Comedy legend Ken Dodd performed the unveiling ceremony and a great day was had by over 2000 fans from all over the world. Press and television coverage was full on and I was lucky enough to be given a place in the press area right at the front so here's some extended and exclusive footage from the day which you didn't see on the news. The sun was shining in Ulverston and I congratulate my fellow sons of the desert for this wonderful achievement. Bill Cubin would have been very proud of this moment which left us all with a lump in our throats. Thanks to Eric Woods for taking the bull by the horns and fronting the campaign to raise the funds.

  • I amazed it took so long to happen

  • tattyfilarious

  • This was a wonderfully eccentric and slightly dysfunctional event that had "FUN" written all over it, and I only wish that I could have been there to see it!

Take a poor humble boy from Ulverston England, and a poor boy from Harlem, Georgia, and put them together and what do you get?

Almost a century of clean cut comedy that just gets better with age, and 2 immortal giants who defined the genre like no other...

Laurel and Hardy, tonic for a troubled world. LOVE YA'! :-)

  • Congratulations Sons of the Desert and especially Bill Cubin RIP... that statue will hopefully be there as long as the boys' films are watched... forever!

Doesn't Harlem, GA need one too?

  • Thanks for posting. It was the Perfect Day!
