'The old lighthouse' At dungeness was the 4th lighthouse built in dungeness, but when the nuclear powerstation was built, it blocked some of the light, It was Opened in 1904 and was decommission in 1960. It took three years to build and is an Historic Grade 11 building. It is almost 46 metres high to the top of the weather vane, 11 metres in diameter and constructed of engineering bricks with sandstone inner walls. Over three million bricks were used to build the structure.

Although, it is no-longer used, it is open to the public, Times are available on the the official website (NOT TRINITY HOUSE)

  • I am still upset that the new lighthouse is closed off and that the Tannoys don't work anymore!

  • @Umpqua1012 So you've said. To be fair, its highly likely that the ladder at the top of the new lighthouse is dangerous...also, if trinity house are to remain the best lighthouse service in the world, as I believe they are, then they need to build new and remove old aids to navigation to keep up to date and ahead of everywhere else.

Notice nowhere else in the world (Or very few places which i don't know of) have tannoys - they were only invented because trinity house tested out new warnings.

  • @Umpqua1012 Infact, Dungeness used to be where Fog Signals were tested by trinity house - there was a large mast with a fog detector on (A large search light which scans the area, with a telescope on top, which can tell how far a fog bank is away - this was state of the art 1960's technology - i have a picture of one, which i'll upload to my site) and many tannoy units and lightship fog signals were tested here.

  • @LighthousesUK So that is what that Tannoy box was for that's still sitting on the grounds!

  • @Umpqua1012 Yes. It is one of several which were built and tested there - it is the only remaining one.

  • this is brilliant, whenever i am down this way i always come and have a look. I like to sit down here at night, apart from the powerstation ruining the landscape this area is nice and very relaxing place to sit at night
