@ejmysteriousx72435 No, all the humans were injected with this thing that would allow for them to adapt to the environment on the new planet, but when the ship crashed, people adapted to the environment on the ship instead and basically became monsters. Atleast, that's what I got.

I just read in Wikipedia that the hunters are the devolved version of their ancestors who were the original people that Gallow threw to survive through competition for his entertainment, so whoever wrote that agrees with what you've said. Again, I like the idea but didn't find anything in the movie to suggest they are devolved and not just very well adapted to the ship nor that the ancestors were any better or different ...

That's part of the thing, but the other part is they'd been awake for so long in the confines of the ship (800 years +), over generations, the hunters had degenerated.
