Márta Sebestyén/Muzsikás - My Sweet Gregory (live)
In Romanian Moldavia there is a isolated group of ethnic Hungarians known as the Moldavian Csángó people. The Moldavian Csángó Hungarian language is known to preserve a much older form of Hungarian than the Hungarian spoken today in Hungary.
Folk music is still alive and dances are very popular among young Hungarians as you can see in many dance houses in Budapest and in other towns.
This is a live recording of a concert at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest, Hungary.
Lyrics in approximate English:
When Gregory was a bachelor, he used to be my lover,
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
When he was a bachelor, he used to have a walnut stick
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
He played music, I danced, I was such a sweet girl
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
My slippers were clapping, my ribbons were rustling
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
Hey hop here, hop there and hey hop there
Hey hop between your legs iha haha ha
Gregory cut the bacon, Kati fried the pancakes
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
We did not get the duty right, they scolded our mothers
My sweet Gregory, Gregory my dear one
Resze resze resze te
Speckled little chicken
You lured me into the hemp-field
And left me in a long chemise
Lyrics in approximate Hungarian:
mikor Gergely legény vót, ő nékem szeretőm vót
édes Gergelem, kedves Gergelem
mikor Gergely legény vót, diófábul botja vót
édes Gergelem, kedves Gergelem
Gergely sültült, én táncoltam, jaj, be kedves lányka voltam
The dancers at 2:14 look like Romanian Călușarii. Are there also Romanians in the video?
Not that I would mind if they did appear in those pictures.

This is really funny: "Gregory cut the bacon, Kati fried the pancakes"

@csiszku1 :) egyetértek :) visszagondolva,úgy egyhe 17éve,amikor is /talán valamelyi kpesti táncháztalálkozónak hála :)/ szembesultem azzal is,hogy a magyar népzenének bizony ilyen vad, osi ritmusai is vannak, mint a moldvaiak és csángók, szinte nyomban elolvadtam, pontosabban bevadultam...azóta stabilan hozzám a legkozelebb álló ritmusok,hiába nôttem fel teljesen más tájegységek népzenéjén :) /gyokereim a Bodrogkozhoz kotnek :)/
