We recently scanned the whole of the Museum's Great Hall and its objects with a 3D laser scanner. As the resulting animation was so startling (& slightly unnerving) we thought you'd like to see it.

It's not of broadcast quality (no sound in the clip for example), however it's well worth watching just to see how close to the actual, physical Great Hall this animation looks.

None of this is actual film footage, it's simply points of data built up by firing beams of lasers at the objects (and the visitors, who you might spot as 'spindles' walking around the exhibits) in the Museum, and then transferred to a computer to build 3D models.

  • It's too bloody dark! Turn the lights on! The NRM is a fantastic musueum to visit, but this video seems pointless to me - we get it; The Great Hall is big; but how about actually showing what's there instead of these poor quality hollow images?

  • Thanks for your comment.

As mentioned in the description this video isn't of broadcast quality and we certainly don't pretend that it replaces any videos we'll make of the actual Museum.

We just thought you'd all like to see it as it's an eerily identical simulation to the actual Great Hall.

  • And the point of the exercise was? I do hope some restoration project didn't go wanting for cash at the expense of having a play with a bit of modern tech !

  • Do some more behind the scene videos, or about the Flying Scotman, more dutchess videos they were great.

  • matrix meets nrm

  • Beautiful rendering - a little dark, but it serves to illustrate greatly just how incredible the great hall is.

  • its incredible what tech will do today

  • great video mate 5 stars and fav

  • lieca or topcon HDI

  • Laser scanners have major drawbacks in terms of their use with buildings.
