Hot Weather Tips for Pets
Please follow these guidelines to protect your pets when the temperature rises
• Always make sure your pet has fresh water every day. Check daily to make to ensure water
bowl has not tilted over or is empty.
• Never leave an animal alone in a parked vehicle, even with the windows open. Overheating
can kill an animal. Temperature rises quickly in a parked car even in the shade.
• Always provide plenty of shade for an animal staying outdoors. Make sure animals have
shade throughout the day as the sun moves along the horizon.
• Bring pets indoors during the hottest part of the day if possible.
• Do not exercise pets during the day, after a meal, nor in humid weather. Exercise only during
the coolest hours in the morning or in the late evening.
• In extreme hot weather, do not let your dog stand on the street and keep walks to a minimum.
Dogs paws can burn on the sidewalk and on asphalt.
• Keep a current license and identification tag on your animal. Also keep a current photo in the
event the dog becomes lost when traveling.
• When traveling always carry a fresh gallon of water.
• Avoid taking your pet to the beach, unless you can provide a shady spot and plenty of fresh
water for it to drink.
• Be sensitive to old and overweight animals in hot weather.
• Be alert for coolant leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste of
coolant and ingestion can cause death.
