  • I think the playing in this video is wonderful and extremely esoteric.

It's a shame that the bass and rhythm section aren't a little more well mixed so you can hear the complexity of the rhythms he is creating and how well they actually do fit with clave. Also the colors he pulls out of simple minor 1-4-5 progression are inspiring.

  • Perhaps those giving negative remarks and feedback would be happier hearing a salsa piano performer soloing using a blues scale and the same salsa cliché rhythms and licks that have been done a billion times? I sure you can find many of those videos on YouTube...

    Wonderful playing Jim!

  • las escalas d.Pm. LO demaas normalito

  • Man, the most stereotypical aspect of jazz musicians is how they are so snobby --- as can be seen here in some of the comments. Who cares, its just music!

Nice work Funnell - you play what you play! If you were trying to fit into the "style" of salsa playing, you would be further away from truly improvising.

  • I love latin music. I love piano. But this is boring. This solo is very self-indulgent. A lot of times he tries to force melody that isn't there and like ton2as said it's too jazzy. It's unfocused. I feel like this guy isn't listening to the rest of the band. I would never say that he isn't a technically good player but this solo doesn't evoke emotion. It's just a jazz exercise that ignores the feel of the rest of the music. My two cents.

  • too jagged and lost for my liking!

  • Since when does salsa comes from jazz!?

To whomever said that: you need to brush up on your knowledge of latin music.

  • @s958570 It s a very good solo and this pianist have a lot of feeling. Sorry for my english

  • Very nice playing!

  • chill out my friends. i'm not a salsa piano player, i don't consider myself one, and who gives a sh*t anyway??! if u wish to check out my personal stuff, please visit my myspace (jimfunnell) or my youtube channel (funnelljazz) and leave ME a comment. i'd be glad to get some feedback directly. cheers.

  • And Who Youve Play With Does NOT Tell You How Good You Are. There Are Pianists, Percussionists, Singers In My Colombia,, That Will Chew And Spit Out Many Pro Musicians,, But Cant Because They Need To Work To Feed Their Families. So, Dont Give Me That Resume Crap. I Can Throw My Resume Out There And Leave You Speechless. Play For The Love Of It, Not For The Fame.

  • There Are Certain Things You Have To Understand In The Art Of Improvising. The Usage Of Your Scales, Chords And You Need Flavor, Sabor. Sabor Isnt Taught At Any University, Any School Anywhere. Your Born With It. Everyone Has A Different Flavor. This Guys' Jazzy, Some Is Blues, Some Is Traditional, Some Is Sloppy. Deal With It.
