S. Clay Wilson is THE premier comic artist here. None better! He taught Crumb to draw without censoring/editing himself (Crumb himself will agree with this statement).

whilst comic art has gotten better and now more than any other time can the progenitors be called artists, i feel the writing has pretty much stayed the same eg; mainly average apart from a few exceptional exceptions. that is to say moore, ennis, brubaker, wagner, grant, miller and a few others..you know who they are if you like comics..all the rest suck. dammit i almost missed out gaiman.
