I agree about the shoulder thing. I had my gray on my lap while reading, and I bent down and made a kissing noise to him, startling him. Needless to day, my sweet baby tore my lip. My avian vet asked me to come in so he could take a photo of the damage so he could show kids when he does school talks to illustrate how much damage even a tame loving bird could do.

cont. It is also dangerous (for people) for the bird to sit on their shoulders because of misdirected aggression or if the bird feels like he is falling. He doesn't care what he grabs or how much pressure he puts on it so that he won't fall. Better to play with him on your hand or forearm and be safe.

cont. That is why it is so important not to bite any food and then give it to your bird and to never, ever, under any circumstances, let your dog and cat interact with your bird. Dogs have more of this bacteria in their mouths than we do and cats have more than dogs. It is playing Russian Roulette with your friend's life.

If you do, then please rescue one from someone who can no longer keep it. And please realize just how large of a commitment this is. The birds live for 80 years and need constant attention 24/7 every day of every year. Also please educate yourself regarding potential health problems (yours and the birds), and vet bills, and the many stress-related problems birds in captivity can suffer from. I agree with you... Its not gross not in my opinion, but its VERY bad for your birds health. If you hadnt done your research on what type of bacteria we have in our mouth then you should and read thoe and know MOST of the intestinal bacteria your birds will get is from kissing people, eating from their mouth(Number one reason in tame pets that kiss and eat out of their mommas mouths) and then bad food...

Yes, the bacteria is called Pasteurella multocida and any large concentration of it can kill a healthy bird in as little as one hour.
