songs: Money Trouble - Lumumba
artist: Zeal Onyia
year: 1950's (?)

Zeal Onyia was a Nigerian trumpeter and band leader and is considered to be one of the architects of professional popular musicianship in Nigeria. In 1953 he went to Ghana and played with ET Mensah in the Tempos Band before moving on to the Spike Anyankors Rhythm Band. He came back to Nigeria and along with Bobby Benson, Eddie Okonta and Victor Olaiya became one of the great trumpeters of the golden era of highlife in the 60s and early 70s.

Zeal Onyia was the consummate musician with a wide taste for a variety of musical idioms. It is a known fact that Chief Stephen Osadebe was mentored by Zeal Onyia. When Louis Armstrong heard Zeal playing on his visit to Nigeria in 1961 he recognized a protégée. "Who is that hip cat?" Armstrong enquired. That acquaintance translated into instant respect and a life long friendship between the two that lasted until the great Satchmo passed on in 1974.

These recordings were posted by Don Maxwell on his abstractconcreteworks web site. They were taken from a tape of tape that was originally recorded off an old 78 rpm record given to Don by Zeal Onyia himself in 1964. On the post Don tells the wonderful story about how these tapes came to be and it is well worth the read if you are interested. Go to:

After leaving school he worked as a nurse's assistant and a postal clerk. In October, 1958 Lumumba founded the National Congolese Movement (MNC). Lumumba was arrested by Mobutu's soldiers and transferred to Elizabethville, Katanga, where he was murdered on 17th January, 1961. Belgian government was behind the events in Katanga. His vision is one Africa
