Should be recognized as among the truly great singers--as soulful as Aretha Franklin. What a shame that she's so little known now.

"Help Me Make It Through the Night" is a country music ballad composed by Kris Kristofferson and released on his 1970 album Kristofferson.
Also recorded in 1971 by Elvis Presley, Sammi Smith's 1971 recording of the song is the most commercially successful version; among the most successful country singles of all time in terms of sales, popularity and radio airplay, also a crossover hit on the pop chart. The most successful version after Smith's was recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1972.

My mother's best friend turned me on to country music, (Wilda Potter from a town outside of Fresno, CA) in the early '60s (she watched Grand Ol' Opry at our place).
Of course in those days, country & western hits crossed over on the pop charts, so we heard "End Of The World" (Skeeter Davis), "From A Jack To A King", "Late Date:, "Devil Woman", great stuff like that...
