A very exclusive short documentary about the traditional Japanese art of sword making.

This recording was made by the Japanese government in the Bizen Osafune Japanese sword museum (aka Bizen Osafune Token Village) and is one of the few recordings of the complete craft (forging, polishing and mounting) is shown by traditional Japanese craftsmen.

  • Most ww2 swords had 1 peg mostly but most older blades had 2 . And new blade of today have 2 also

I'm sorry to correct in this but Japanese swords are traditionally equipped with one bamboo pin (mekugi). Older swords may have more holes in the tang but these are nog used when mounted, it is often an indication that the tang has been shortened or the sword has been remounted.

  • where is part 3 and 4? nice video very informative...domo arigato.

  • I noticed the first sword has one peg hole. The second one has 2 peg holes for the mekugi. Why is that? Is that a modern trend in katana sword making? Isn't it they only have one mekugi or peg in the traditional way of making it. Please enlighten me.

  • Amazing craftsmen. True modern day Samruai.
