'Much' is used with uncountable nouns and 'many' is used with countable nouns. However, 'a lot of' and other quantifiers such as 'loads of' can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns.

@MadridTeacher Thanks! I probably should have inserted those instead of 'oodles of' and 'jillions of' - a fair bit more common! The idea that I may be sitting in a class and one of the students pipes up with 'There were oodles of people at the party last night' was too good not to act upon. Anyway, I'll try and engineer it so your comment remains at the top and easily visible to the students. Thanks again for your continued support.
