"Scotch and Soda" as recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1958 and included on their first album is a song with an interesting history. Dave Guard, a member of the Trio, first heard it while he was dating the older sister of baseball's Tom Seaver at their home. The song had been a favorite of Seaver's parents since they first heard it played in a piano bar on their honeymoon back in 1932, and they decided to make it "their song" and had the piano player write down the music and lyrics. Guard loved the song, the Trio recorded it, but they never discovered who wrote it although they searched for years to discover the composer.

  • Maybe the best relaxation song ever...

  • Looking back I've come to consider this piece one of their best.It was very special the first I had heard it. Something about it's hint at minor tone, attitude of the singer and it's simplicity appealed to me. I heard it in my head walking the streets to collect bottles for 2 cent depoist return. Brings back memories of days long gone. Thanks for the post...

  • Dave Guard was such a talented soul. He put his own signature sound on every song he sang especially this one with the twang of that terrific acoustic sound made a unique finish. This is one of the great ones.

  • I have met Bob on a number of occasions in Vegas and yes, he is truly an asshole...

  • 'Hope you never have to meet Bob Shane in person. He is a real asshole...

  • Thanks for posting this truly great song.

  • You can hear Bob Shane tell the story of the song's origin in the video titled "BOB SHANE- SCOTCH AND SODA 8/18/07.

  • I don't know about the story about Seaver's parents, but the copyright lists

    Dave Guard as the composer.

  • Loved it way back when and right now...Huichol53.......
