@lieberat Bin Laden did not count on the very aggressive USA counter-attack. He thought the USA would wimp out. George Bush attacked correctly in Afghanistan, but wrongfully in Iraq. In Iraq Saddam Hussein was the only strongman able to keep that country together. If the USA leaves Iraq, the Persian Empire will be reborn, although under the mullahs. Fronting on Israel, a war will become inevitable. That is what spooks Israel.

@lieberat The whole plan was to get the USA at war with Iran or at least to stay in Iraq and thus shield Israel from Iranian expansion. The Persian Kings had their capital in Iraq and Persia (Iran) still hankers for that land. It was Osama Bin Laden who upset the applecart of the Middle East as George Bush then invaded Iraq, got rid of Saddam Hussein, and there was no local Middle Eastern balance of power any more. Bin Laden and Bush were loose cannons who did not know "realpolitik."
