Ithaca is Gorges is the local slogan. Along the Gorge Trail in Buttermilk Falls State Park and other gorge parks in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, you climb up natural stone staircases by stone masonry walls and cross stone bridges. These trails were originally built in the 1920s and 30s under the guidance of Robert H. Treman, first chairman of the Finger Lakes State Park Commission. Some of the original work was done by the Civilian Conservation Corps or CCC. But gorges are rough places to build trails, and they need lots of repair and even rebuilding. In this short video, state park stone masons Ross and Steve work on the Gorge Trail at Buttermilk Falls. Learn more about area gorges and the city of Ithaca in our books, which you can see at http://owlgorge.com.
