In 1980 the album "The Era of Melissanthi" was released for the first time. Partially autobiographical, it has many layers and many different interpretations according to Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994); It could be the story of a crazy woman - whose name could be Melissanthi - who had lost everything and lived in Hamburg's harbour shortly after the WW2; it could be the chronicle of the first days after the liberation of Greece in 1945 or the fictional and poetic blend of Mellisanthi's story with the Greek liberation. Hadjidakis had always been deeply involved with politics and this is probably one of his most political albums. At the same time it bears a unique sensitivity in its lyrics; Lyrics that should be considered as poetry.
I tried to translate the song in a way that it could be comprehended by non Greek speakers. I'm not a poet so the result is quite simple and I'm afraid that some of the beautiful metaphors, references and Greek idioms will get lost in the translation.
The "A Clock in the Tavern" (Ena Roloi sto Kapileio) is about the desperate struggle of two young men to stop Time before their final goodbye. It's never easy to say goodbye to someone, especially knowing that this could be the last time you see this person.
This video is my personal goodbye to a period of my life. Things that I would love to keep close and dear to my heart but time has taken away. Images related to memories from that period. Other vivid, other faded. Other fighting to stay alive, other pushed away as they bring back sorrow and pain.
There's a specific line in this song which in my opinion makes one of the most beautiful and complete poems ever written;
"-Where are you? Tell me!
-I'm here. Away from you..."
