Mic Shootout on the Sennheiser e835, Sennheiser MD421-II, and Audio Technica AT3035. Performing the first part of Handel Bourree on a "reconstructed" German copy of a Stradivari violin.

Sennheiser e835: Dynamic handheld microphone mainly used for stage performances. It is Sennheiser alternative to the classic Shure SM58. To my taste, the e835 has more sizzle than the SM58, but harsher mids. A little EQ can get a better sound than the SM58, both at vocals and violin. I usually take away some mids and boost the lows.

Sennheiser MD421-II (Dynamic): This puppy is used a lot in broadcasting, as well as for drum set toms. But there are some other great applications to this mic. One of the classic microphones for the radio industry since the '60's, the MD421 has a 5-step bass roll-off switch and captures the low-mids and low frequencies with a nice, silky aura. It is also very articulate, meaning it has a boost in the higher range, as well. Very nice. Here, I compare to my e835 handheld mic, which I had previously used before for voice-over internet radio. For a professional broadcasting background review on the MD421, also check out Mark Jensen's review of this mic at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krqm8gd26jE

Audio Technica AT3035: This is my Go-To microphone for vocals and violin. I often combine with other small-diaphragm condenser like the Sure SM81 or Behringer C-2 pair. All-around great condenser for many purposes. This mic is an excellent choice on voice-over applications where there is a modest amount of room treatment (sound booth, foam absorbers). I usually don't use any EQ on this one, I end up rolling off the highs a bit when mixing the violin track.

Thanks for watching!
