"Rico Vacilon" is a tune that Melissa taught us after she went to Cuba to study music. This deceptively simple song requires a rhythm that must be just so. When people hear that cha-cha beat they cant help but to start to dance. Melissas voice is beautiful on this cut. Maybe one day well go to Cuba together.
"Rico Vacilon" was recorded during the June 7, 2009 performance by the Dysfunctional Family Jazz Band (DFJB) at New York's celebrated music venue the Rodeo Bar. The band includes Patty Carpenter and Melissa Shetler on vocals, Scott Shetler on saxophone, Tony Garnier on bass, Paul Sullivan on guitar, and Russ Meissner on drums.
The DFJB's new album "Come Over" brings the band into the studio for its first album of entirely original music. Carpenter teamed up with her long time friend and writing partner, poet Verandah Porche, to craft their life into song. The resulting album muses on the ups and downs of living - from raising children and barns, to losses, lovers and friends.
