Rules? What are you talking about. Discipline yes but rules. Rules for training yes but for preforming? With natural talent even discipline is reduced and he had talent in spades. All you have to do is listen to a few versions by different singers to know how much he had.Clearly you know little about Opera and the voice training involved.
As for me I'll defer to someone with far more knowledge then anyone here.
Arturo Toscanini called it, simply and correctly, the "voice of the century"

I think it would be more accurate to say that Lanza was in a category by himself.A transitional singer that did do numerous concerts, who was very successful doing Hollywood movies.Lanza was a singer that sang operatic arias and duets but not truly an opera singer who would have signature roles to his credit or many entire operas that were sung live or in the studio.I must say that he was unique and excellent in many of his selections with his beauty of voice & intimate style of singing.Enjoy

There are two ways of looking at it. I agree about his quality of voice - no discussion there! But is it accurate to say that he had been the greatest in opera? Is it that easy? Oprea requires hard, hard work and performance by rules! Lanza had not the strongest character. I think he know what he did by staying out of opera?

I realize that Lanza did not dedicate his career to opera and Hollywood seemed to be his priority.I do think that everything was in his reach to be a great operatic tenor and I am confident he would have succeeded.I did say that sometimes he falls short. Lanza's quality of voice is second to no one, including but not limited to Di Stefano,Bjorling Gigli,Albanese&Cortis.

I'm sure it has been said by those more intelligent than I that Lanza (a Family friend, I am from South Philadelphia) had a tremendous instrument- a gift - but he chose Hollywood. None of my business but I wish he would have opted for the Stage.
