@woodentops woodentops--were we on the same plane? I was a small child flying with my family from England to America when we stopped in Reykjavik. Before we landed (November 1963) the pilot circled over the volcano. It was night time and I remember the fiery red/orange color of the volcano. I've never forgotten!

as a small boy i too saw this on the way to rekyavik. the plane (those were the days) flew low and circled the island a few times so we could all see. Ive never forgotten the sight of it and iceland has forever remained a place of interest to me. I had a Surtsey book that i bought in the airport. Spilt ribena on it flying back past comparing the pics in the book to the view out the window. I have the book still but many of the pages fused with the ribena from decades ago!

im from iceland and my father wash fhigting
the volcano in vestmaney!!!!
I watched this eruption aged 10 with my father on August 20th 1964. A group of tourists including us climbed to the top of the ash hill overlooking the crater and looked down on its lava lake and lava fountains! The lake of molten rock looked like crazy paving with glowing rock between the slabs and the fountaining explosions made the liquid slosh like an angry sea. Anyone else from that group on 20/8/1964 still around to comment?
