The Ring shopping area, I recall the hardware shop used to be 'Hunts Stores and Provisions' run by Mr & Mrs Wilson in the 60's and 70's. There used to be a butchers and a small laudrette next to Wilsons shop. The One Stop Shop was a hardware shop.
I recall they was a hairdressers shop where in 1967 I was with our 'gang' and we saw a Jeep park up outside with 4 occupants. We recognised them as the 60's pop group ' The Move'. I remember we scrambled around and found some discarded cigarette packets and scraps of paper from the pavement and we got their autographs. They were very friendly and we had a chat with them. We found out that a relative of one of the 'Move' either owned or worked at the hairdressers.I kept my autographed cigarette packet for years, until dad had a clean out in 1979 and it was just rubbish in the bottom of an old jug I used to have,I only found out a year after when I came to look for it, I was gutted. The community hall used to have a fantastic disco for us youngsters. (The Chinese takeaway used to be an off licence. The The ring itself was all concrete at that time with a grass verge and trees surrounding it. I also recall that the Army used to occasionally have a recruiting stand on the Ring with a large tent and tank. There was a small ring of grass at the centre with more trees.

  • Wackers Disco was a broom cupboard, Jimmy Saville was worried about the competition from 'Smiley Wilson'. Was that his wife or sister he lived with?
