Moss had to win and Hawthorn had to finish lower than 2nd for Moss to win the Championship. The Ferrari plan was always for the team to race tactically and never to contest outright victory with Moss and risk wearing out the Ferrari. By taking pole Hawthorn made his point- it was an easy fast circuit except for the shade and sand on corners. The real contest was always whether Vanwall No 2 Brooks could stay ahead of Hawthorn and a most interesting duel was underway when Brooks Vanwall broke.
