Adjiedj Bakas is trendwatcher or futurologist. He has written five books in English about trends and the future. He advises entrepreneurs and governments about their future orientation and future scenarios.
Adjiedj Bakas is an advisor to many multinational corporations, including Shell, Unilever, ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, Air France KLM, Apple, Philips, Merrill Lynch, Nike, Pepsi, Sara Lee, Aegon, Ahold, Campina, Corio, Fortis, KPMG, Deloitte, PWC, KPN, TNT, Heineken, Maxeda, Stork, and Océ.
In the Netherlands he was voted "Black Entrepeneur of the Year" in 2008 and "Trendwatcher of the Year" 2009. "Management Team" magazine elected him as one of the 25 most creative Dutch men and innovation magazine "Sprout" elected him as one of the 50 most influential Dutch men under the age of 50. NIMA, the Dutch branch organization of marketeers elected him as the most influential trendwatcher amongst Dutch marketeers.
Born (Nov 15th, 1963) in Surinam (former Dutch Guyana) in South America of Indian parents, Adjiedj Bakas has lived in Amsterdam since 1983. He wrote his first book Megatrends Nederland (Dutch) in 2005. He has since written in Dutch and English, and his books are currently being translated into Brazilian-Portuguese and Chinese. His books in English are: Beyond the Crisis (about the future of capitalism and the World economy, The Future of Faith (about the future of business ethics, morals, spirituality and religion, co-authored with philosopher Minne Buwalda),World Megatrends (about the future of humanity) and The Future of Love (about the future of loneliness, intimacy, friendship, sex and love). With fellow trendwatcher Rob Creemers he wrote Living without Oil (about the future of nature and energy).
In his book Beyond the Crisis, Adjiedj predicts that the current economic depression is linked firmly to a crisis of confidence rather than lack of money. He foresees that half of the US's 7,000 banks will cease to exist and millions of jobs will disappear as bank finances dry up for previously healthy companies. He also envisions that the oil price will reach record heights again, which will mean countries that do not spend the next years developing alternative energy supplies will remain in recession.
Adjiedj also predicts that companies such as Google and Virgin (both of which have applied for banking licences) will offer consumers alternative financial services to the established organisations. Consumers will also demand more ethical and "green" products according to their own values, forcing financial institutions to listen. Sovereign wealth funds will also impact the financial services market, as more assets will be owned through financing, particularly from the Middle East. With increased consolidation, financial services will become more global, self-regulated and ultimately more ethical.
