The sound of the Nat King Cole Trio for years was made simply with Nat at the piano and various people on bass and guitar (bongos were added later). By the time of this recording during Aug-Sep., 1956, the Nat King Cole Trio had been "extinct" for a number of years, but there was always a clamor for Nat to return to his former jazz sound, and Nat decided to do just that, one more time, but with a slightly different twist on what was called the "After Midnight Sessions". With Nat back on piano and the ever-present bass and guitar in play, another instrument was added to each of the songs Nat recorded on these sessions, and a star guest instrumentalist was invited to play. On this particular recording of "Candy", a song that was originally a hit for Johnny Mercer, Jo Stafford, and the Pied Pipers back in 1945, Nat used trumpet master Harry "Sweets" Edison.

  • Hmm, I'm just wondering. If Hollywood was to do a big-screen film about Nat King Cole, who do we think should play him?

  • @amd77j Years ago when I thought about this, Denzel Washington would have been a perfect choice, but now he would be too old to play Nat. Jamie Foxx, who played Ray Charles, might be able to pull it off, but beyond those two, I have no ideas. Regardless of whom, a big question would be should Nat's actual recordings be used or someone like Foxx imitate Nat's voice?

  • Does anyone know piano chords to this??

  • Recorded August 15, 1956. Mid-Fifties was surely Nat's best period!

  • He was so special

  • So smooth and cool- truly great!

  • i think mos def would fit to play the role

  • @Nocaro I was thinking maybe an unknown actor with musical talents? I think they should use Nat's actual recordings and let the person maybe sing a song or two. Just can't think of anyone to play him. Now, is that an indictment of today's actors/musicians or just that Nat is that unique?;-)
