June 12, 2009 - Full power analog TV transmitters are required to shutdown at midnight. Here's the last few minutes for WRGB (6), WTEN (10), WXXA (23) and WCDC (19) in Albany NY. No fanfare for any of these, which was a bit disappointing - especially for WRGB considering it's historical status as the first television station in the nation.

These four stations were the last to shutdown in the region; WNYT (13) & WCWN (45) having signed off earlier in the day, WMHT (17) back in April, and WYPX (55) last year.

As we scan thru the channels after all the sign offs, you'll notice I come across one signal - that being WNYA-CA (15) the local MyTV affiliate. Since they are a low power Class A station, they get to continue on for the time being. There are a handful of other LPTV signals still on elsewhere in the region, including 49 Gloversville, 8 & 47 Glens Falls, and 52 & 58 Albany.

  • Seems so long ago already. There was something eerie about watching the analog signals go silent though. Kind of like being on a sinking ship I guess.

  • I agree with all of this

  • HDTV digital switchover, monumental clusterf#@*k of the modern age. A taxpayer funded giveaway to the cell phone companies and the cable industry.

  • @spunker88 Except for some of older stations in the province of Newfoundland, there is one there called VOC which must be left over from the colonial days.

  • yes it is Better

  • why the hell was analog TV replaced by digital? TV is it any better?

  • @MSavage59 no can do.

  • @musicman0150 US. Amateur radio station call signs start with A, K, N, or W. Has NOTHING to do with their location. Only the number in the call sign indicates location. ex.: w1aw, New England k6nr, California, w4cgr, South Carolina. Although that's the official designation, any number call sign can be anywhere, especially due to the vanity call sign program and people who relocate are not required to change the number.

  • Farewell to analog TV in Albany, NY!!
