yes and no. Aikido, aiki jutsu are highly stylized. By training it you do become aware of your body, you improve balance and control. Many of the techniques are not functional in "reality" but they are very good tools to develop what I mentioned above. 99% of all self defense (this is my own belief based on my own experience) is dealt on a psychological level. (This may not be true only for womens self defense though.) Self defense is not always the goal, differs between different styles.

@Oneshot112 It's always hilarious that sportsmen usually talk biggest about real martial application. Which is even more funny, when they are talking about martial arts like Daitoryu, a branch of the Takeda Ryu, one of the oldest and well known warrior-clans of Japan. The clan got strong and influential through creating the Aiki-principle. And if actual war isn't testemony enough, think about the fact, that Kano Jigoro was highly influenced by Saigo Shiro (Saigo-ha Daitoryu-Aiki-Jujutsu).

@123udang Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu is not that large of martial art. You'll have better luck looking for an Aikido dojo that stresses strikes and form.
This is not aikido
